Flight to Venice (Jumping Over the Alps)

We got off a little late from West Palm Beach, as our flight was delayed about an hour. But it was no problem making the connection in Atlanta, since we had a four hour window til our flight to Venice took off. Leaving at 5pm, we were on a plane that was apparently an old plane that was originally used to transport military people, then refurbished. It was absolutely freezing, and it wasn’t just me.

Everyone used the blankets provided. After a dinner and three movies, we flew over the Alps in the early morning and landed in Venice at about 8:40 am. Only Brian was able to sleep. Sandy, Craig and I tried, but just couldn’t. We arrived about 10 minutes before the rest of our party, and met up in luggage claim area after they quickly stamped our passports.

We then were met by two men with cars that had been arranged to take us all to the port. The airport is in a rural area, and the drive to the port was rather scenic. We arrived to find a large hangar type building. We ended up having to wait about 2 hours there, since they couldn’t start the check in of passengers until noon. But the complimentary coffee (real, strong coffee) and pastries were great. It was very warm and clear, but we were told that it was even hotter last week.

Craig, Linda and I decided to go explore Venice on our own, since we were scheduled to go to the islands of Murano and Burano the next day. To be continued…
